Our muscle of the month for December is the quadratus lumborum in the lower back. Pain or discomfort in our low back is something we may feel more heavily during the winter months.

The quadratus lumborum is a muscle of the posterior abdominal wall. It is the deepest abdominal muscle and commonly referred to as a back muscle.

Due to poor weather, it is not uncommon for us to stay inactive during these months. Because of this, our lower back does not get the proper exercise needed to remain functional. This leads to an increase risk of injury and lumbar strain for nearly everyone. Cold weather can also cause muscles to lose more heat and contract, causing tightness throughout the body.

Some of the key areas we see problems in within the low back region are the following:

1. Travel – Before you pack your bags for holiday travel, consider getting adjusted. Long car rides, uncomfortable flights, and unfamiliar guest beds are just a few of the culprits that can leave our lower back feeling less than jolly. Make sure your body is ready for travel in the first place. After your trip, if you find that travel has taken a toll on you, Chiropractic care can provide relief.

2. Winter Injuries – Braving the snow and ice can unfortunately lead to falls, winter sports injuries, car accidents, and pain caused by shoveling. More often than not, these specific situations affect our low back the hardest. If bad weather puts you out, make sure you seek help as soon as possible. Waiting may result in more damage and longer healing time.

3. Lack of Exercise – Shorter and colder days can often make it hard to exercise, but can be a major formula for back pain. Not only can it be mentally draining to workout in these conditions – but it can be dangerous! Your morning run and evening bike ride can be wet, cold, and slippery. However, there are many indoor activities such as yoga, palates, and indoor swimming to help you avoid winter pains.
