There is a lot we can learn from the pros about our biomechanics, like mastering the perfect swing and, importantly, taking proper care of our bodies when it comes to repetitive motion.
Most professional golfers bring their chiropractors on tour. This is because, regardless of how good or bad your form is, repeatability is fundamental to the game.
Repetitive golf movements place excessive stress throughout the body. From head to toes, golfers coordinate loaded and repetitive movement in key areas like the back, hips, shoulders, arms, elbows, legs, and knees.
REPETITIVE STRESS & SWING MECHANICS
Just think about all the moving parts (literally) that encompass the mechanics within a swing.
Without oversimplifying it:
✓ The shoulders are in movement against the hips.
✓ The upper body must start by turning opposite to your target.
✓ The lower body must coordinate stability and resistance, with precise foundation, exactness in weight distribution, and just the right amount of complimentary movement.
✓ All the while, your speed and power are dependent on aggressive rotation.
We even call it a “coil.” Essentially, the spine is coiling…. and releasing…. over and over again.
Even with good form, musculoskeletal pain is nearly unavoidable. And with poor mechanics, pain and golf-related injuries only exasperate as time goes on.
COMMON INJURIES
Due to repeated movement and overuse, golfers may experience the following golf injuries and common complaints:
- Back and neck pain
- Shoulder issues—including rotator cuff injuries, impingement, and tears
- Golf and tennis elbow (inflammation in the tendon)
- Knee pain
- Wrist pain
- Hip pain
- Various joint instability
- And osteoarthritis
AVOIDING PAIN
First off, pain should never be dismissed as “par for the course.”
It’s important to listen to any feedback your body is giving you. If you are experiencing persistent and repetitive pain, connect with a professional health expert before more damage occurs.
Visiting a chiropractor is a healthy first step in determining the best course of treatment.
Our goal is to keep you in the game, helping you avoid surgery or invasive intervention as much as possible. We have a full team of physical medicine professionals who will work to relieve your pain with a combination of adjustments, targeted exercises, and possibly, deep tissue massage or acupuncture. Further, our work is focused on improving your body’s strength and foundations. Many issues can then be prevented by practicing correct form, strengthening the body with targeted exercises, and working on flexibility.
If pain is getting in the way of your ability to play and enjoy golf, connect with our team for an assessment. Chiropractic care can relieve pain and ultimately improve your performance.
