Move over Moscow Mule! This gingery, lime mocktail will be your new favorite beverage to sip on this summer. Classic cocktails can leave you dehydrated or feeling groggy the next day. To combat that, try skipping the booze and substituting with your favorite kombucha.
Enjoying kombucha is typically safe for most people but it is best to limit your intake due to the higher calorie and sugar content. It is best to limit your consumption to two 8-ounce servings per day. You want to choose a high-quality, lower calorie, low sugar product with no more than 50 calories and less than 4 grams of sugar per serving.
Kombucha can contribute to your overall health due to its rich source of probiotics and antioxidants but it may not be for everyone. Before deciding if kombucha is the right beverage for you, consult with one of our Functional Medicine Providers. Functional Medicine can help you get to the root cause of your health concerns with diet and lifestyle changes.

Try Dr. Blake Butler, DC’s go-to Kombucha Moktail
“I recommend a kombucha based ‘mocktail’ in the summer time. Kombucha is rich in probiotic species and antioxidants. Kombucha also contains acetic acid. Acetic acid has the capacity to kill harmful microorganisms.
If one experiences bloating following consumption of kombucha, I recommend that they work with a functional medicine provider to address a potential imbalance between the “good’ and “bad” bacteria in the gut.”
Kombucha Mocktail:
- Crushed Ice
- 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
- 4 ounces ginger-flavored kombucha
- For garnish: lime wedge, mint sprig, and/or slice of granny smith apple
Pro Tip: Be sure to store your kombucha in dark glass container to help protect the probiotics from light damage and be refrigerated at all times, even before opening.
