Summer is finally arrived in the Third Coast, and Chicago residents are receiving the payoff from the long winter with beautiful weather. It’s the perfect time to get out, get into shape and revel in the sun.
FitBit Bootcamp
If you’re one to join classes, head to the great outdoors for a wide variety of free fitness classes all over the city. If you’re in need of a Fitbit, head to July’s Mindful Bootcamp on the Chicago Riverwalk between Clark and Lasalle — one participant in the Fitbit Bootcamp will win one.
Sunset Yoga
Through Aug. 20, a variety of classes, from Sunset Yoga to Rush Hour, are available at the Polk Bros Park Performance Lawn by Navy Pier. Designed for all experience levels, these Tuesday classes are led by professionals.
SummerDance Series
Bring a dance partner and take ballroom dance lessons (style of dance varies per week) at Grant Park’s SummerDance Series. Immediately after the lesson, test out your skills with two hours of live music and dancing.
Orangetheory
New to Orangetheory and always wanted to try it? These high-intensity interval training workouts at Gallagher Way in Wrigleyville are designed for new folks wanting to get their heart rates up. Shred415 also is offering pop up classes on the second Tuesday of every month. Test your speed, endurance and strength at the Roosevelt Collection Shops in the South Loop.
Dance in the Park
Early risers who commute to Millennium Park can head to the Great Lawn for a variety of classes through August. Tai Chi, pilates, yoga and Zumba are on the menu, along with a DJ providing tunes. If you love Zumba only, Parkway Bank Park’s Entertainment District provides the backdrop for classes through Aug. 5 with instructors from Rosemont Health and Fitness.
Paddleboard Lessons
Urbanities rejoice — Chicago is a city with an unbeatable view, so why not burn some calories in front of an amazing backdrop? Chicago SUP offers stand-up paddleboard lessons throughout the summer on Lake Michigan, as well as SUP yoga on the lake.
Zoo Yoga
If you prefer yoga on land, Lincoln Park Zoo offers Power Vinyasa and Happy Bodies classes. Kids can enjoy Parent and Toddler Yoga classes, too! Sun & Moon Beach Yoga is also hot during the mornings and evenings on North Avenue Beach.
Fitness at the Field
Love the expansive view of the Field Museum? Fitness at the Field offers outdoor Zumba, Bar Method and Bootcamp classes on the museum’s northwest terrace through Aug. 20.
Butterfly Yoga
Finally, flitter amongst over 40 species of butterflies and birds at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. There yogis will be fully immersed in pools, flowers and scented trees for only $15 per class.
Rooftop Yoga
Water and land may not even be enough, so head toward the sky to the rooftop of the Ritz Carlton’s 75th floor. Each Saturday and Sunday the hotel offers rooftop yoga — don’t forget to make a reservation — these classes get scooped up quickly.
Solo Exercise
Are classes not for you? Want to commute and get some exercise in at the same time? Try Chicago’s unique Divvy bikeshare program. There are hundreds of stations in the Chicago area, making it a convenient way to pick up and drop off at your Divvy location of choice.
