The Impact of Acupuncture and IVF Success Rates
There is growing evidence that acupuncture, as a complementary therapy, can improve chances of success for individuals undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF).
In a study at Vios Fertility Institute in Chicago, from May 2018 to May 2021, the impact of individualized acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer (ET) on Frozen Embryo Transfer rates compared to no acupuncture was observed in 2,330 patients undergoing FET.
Aligned Modern Health’s Dr. Kate Phillippi, L.Ac, Dipl. OM, MSTOM, DACM, FABORM, and Director of Acupuncture Dr. Lamya Kamel, L.Ac, Dipl. OM, MSTOM, DAOM contributed to this research that found a 55% increase in FET live birth rates and a 42% reduction in biochemical pregnancies compared to FET alone.
These results highlight the significant benefits of individualized acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer for patients undergoing FET.

We asked Dr. Phillippi a few questions to provide further insight on how these promising results can help our patients seeking support for fertility.
Why is this study important?
All of the research done thus far on day of embryo transfer acupuncture has been protocolized and that is not exactly reflective of how we practice in clinic. For our research I developed a manual based on Chinese medical principles that allows me to draw diagnostic conclusions based on the patient’s past medical history, past (fertility) cycle history, past OB/GYN history, and other tests and procedures they have done at KindBody. This allows us to give each patient relevant treatments to meet their individual needs.
What do you hope people will learn from this?
Acupuncture is a beneficial treatment to support patients on the day of embryo transfer. Even though we haven’t met the patient before and aren’t always able to do a full evaluation, we can still provide unique and relevant treatments for them.
Where will things go from here research-wise?
I would love to do more research on acupuncture throughout the IVF/fertility journey including during ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, and early pregnancy.
