On National Deep Dish Pizza Day, we’re tossing around a few of our favorite healthy pizza ideas from Aligned Modern Health’s Clinical Nutrition team!
What kind of person doesn’t like pizza?
Alright… that’s a (cheesy) joke. But for those of us with food sensitivities and dietary guidelines, we sometimes feel left out of the pizza party.
From types to toppings, pizza is all about creativity anyways. So, in reality, the skies the limit when it comes to healthy twists for your pie. As accommodations for food sensitivities grow, there are several ways to enjoy a healthier-style pizza.
Our Clinical Nutrition expert and Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist Sue Smith, MS, LDN, offers a few of her favorite “pizza-inspired” recipe finds:
✓ Crust can be customized. As the meme goes, if cauliflower can become a pizza, you too can do anything! These days, you can find a variety of store-bought pizza crusts—frozen or pre-made—and gluten-free options on most restaurant menus these days. Just be sure to look closely at all ingredients.
✓ Choose your cheese. Similarly, if you are limiting dairy, you can now find dairy-free, vegan-friendly options like Daiya Pizza and Amy’s in the frozen section at the store, Or if you opting for a lighter cheese, look for part-skim mozzarella, sharp provolone, and naturally lower-fat Parmesan.
✓ Don’t forget the veggies… add ‘em to the top or be sure to serve with a salad!
Gluten-Free Dine-In or Delivery
To Deep Dish or not?
If you reside in Chi-town, chances are you definitely been asked to give your feelings on Deep Dish Pizza. If you’re keeping things gluten-free, this can be even more polarizing. But of course… there’s totally an app for that. We suggest Find Me Gluten Free or Slice Life’s Gluten Free Finder.
And to cut to the chase… or slice into that pie, our team took a taste test into one Chicago’s favorite Gluten-Free Deep Dish Pizza’s at Chicago’s Pizza. These pizza pros have perfected the art of gluten-free crust and customers say the flavor is identical to their classic pies. They even offer gluten-free focaccia rolls (garlic bread), pasta, and desserts!
