The summer of sitting is upon us. For many, sitting was already a considerable health concern. Our bodies were not designed to sit for extended periods. Yet our work habits and comfortable lifestyles resulted in a lot of it.

Chances are if you are working from home or following quarantine guidelines, you have been sitting even more.

Before you tell yourself that you’ll fix it tomorrow (or some day soon), keep in mind that sitting all day is adversely impacting your health right now in the following ways:

Weak legs and glutes. If you aren’t using your lower body, your muscles will weaken, putting your body at risk of injury.

Tight hips. Sitting all day will shorten your hip flexors, increasing chances of knee and back pain.

Bad back. Sitting also places stress on the muscles and discs of your back and neck – leading to premature degeneration and chronic pain.

Weight gain. When you spend most of your day sitting without proper movement, you place yourself at higher risk for metabolic syndrome and weight gain.

Anxiety and depression. Depression and anxiety can be higher for people who sit more. In part, this may be because exercise (which is lacking) is beneficial for mental health.

Staying active and consistent is a genuine challenge right now. If you are experiencing higher levels of musculoskeletal pain and discomfort – or find yourself struggling with motivation – we can help! Fill out the form below to get started.
