Happy Pi Day! As you may know, Pi Day is a reference to the ratio of a circle’s circumference in decimal form (3.14), but we’re just excited to have a reason to indulge in pie!
While Spring can be a very popular time to detox the body and start new diets, we’re here to give you some helpful tips to make pie fit into your keto, paleo, Whole30, and many other diets. Many store-bought pies can contain empty carbs, unnecessary sugars, and artificial flavors. This Pi day, we encourage you to make your own pie! (Who doesn’t love a good homemade pie?!)
Here are some of our favorite tips to make your pie healthier:
- Gelatin isn’t just for jello! There are numbers of reasons to incorporate Beef Gelatin into recipes. It offers digestive support, immune support, aids with joint pain, and improves skin health. Our Functional Medicine Physicians often recommends adding the gelatin to savory pies like pot pies or quiches.
- Gluten-Free crust. This one is a no-brainer! Many of us are sensitive to gluten, so going with a gluten-free crust makes pie easily available for those sensitive to gluten. Not to mention, it still satisfies the “carb crave”!
- Dairy-free whipped cream to top your pies!While classic whipped cream is delicious, your body may not love the way it makes you feel after eating it. Milk and dairy products are a common source of inflammation, food sensitivity, and GI upset. Click here for our recipe.
- Use natural sweeteners. Many store-bought pies can pile up the sugar when it isn’t even needed! There are many ingredients to make your pie exceptionally sweet without adding sugar. Try fresh berries or bananas, raw organic honey, agave syrup, or coconut milk cream!
