Let’s face it, cupcakes have pretty much got it going on. They are a cake in a cup. What’s not to love?
Don’t let their teeny-tiny size fool you, these luscious treats can still pack on a punch of swirly-twirly sugary overload and unhealthy fats. Our Clinical Nutritionist, Olivia Wagner, and Functional Medicine expert, Dr. Alaina Gemelas have some healthy secrets to help you enjoy cupcakes on National Cupcake Day and any celebration throughout the year!
Oliva’s Says: Store bought frostings are often packed with processed sugar and trans fat. Swap your conventional cake topper for an avocado, coconut cream, or coconut oil based blend! Take a bite out of a few of these options:
2 ripe avocados
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder or raw cacao
3 tablespoons maple syrup
1/2 freshly scraped vanilla bean
Scoop out the avocado flesh and place in a food processor with cocoa powder, maple syrup, and vanilla- puree until smooth! Wait until cupcakes are completely cooled to frost. Adapted from PopSugar.com.
Dr. Alaina Gemelas Says: OOORRRRR, just skip the sweets and do… MEATCAKES!! That’s right. Check out the WellnessMama for a scrumptious recipe on “Meatloaf Cupcakes with Sweet Potato Frosting.”
