Every new year we watch new diets come to the forefront of wellness trends.

In the 70’s we saw Weight Watchers rise to the top. Then came fads like the Grapefruit Diet, the Cookie Diet (yes, it was a thing), and the Cabbage Diet.

More recently, regimes like Paleo, Whole30, Keto, and the Mediterranean Diet have emerged and gained subsequent marketing life. This year, the focus on interment fasting has taken up significant trending space.

All this goes to show that when it comes to diets, we have copious options and our cultural fixation with weight loss is nothing new. Time after time, it’s the most common resolution – with reason. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services 70% of adults are overweight or obese.

Weight gain may feel personally unpleasant and even more so, the associated health concerns are significant and vast. Obesity is a major risk factor for disease and is linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and sleep disorders.

Experts predict that on average only 5% of those aiming to lose weight will be able to keep it off in the long run. In part this is because dieting alone is like a Band-Aid. Certain diets may be effective to a degree (you might temporarily lose weight) but many popular diets fail to fully heal the underlying issues that caused the weight gain in the first place.

This is because your weight is not just linked to the food you eat or the calories you burn. Weight is a complex result of your hormonal pathways and systems that regulate your metabolism. Often being overweight (or underweight) is a symptom of underlying disfunction or hormonal imbalance in the body.
