Q&A with Dr. Butler
What are you most passionate about professionally? Personally?
Professionally, I am passionate about educating individuals on the roles diet and lifestyle modification play when working to achieve optimal wellbeing. Personally, I am passionate about building meaningful relationships, and working to become a slightly better human being every day.
What three traits define you?
Curious, Honest, and Humble. I have a relatively analytical mind and am always learning. I attempt to be honest with others and myself. I understand that I do not have all the answers and realize that it is best to surround myself with an exceptional group of people in order to grow.
What would you do even if you didn’t get paid to do it?
I would continue to study functional medicine, nutrition, and the human brain.
What are you surprisingly good at?
I make a mean guacamole.
What’s one thing you couldn’t live without?
Family. I have a wonderful support system.
What’s the biggest proof that you’re good at what you do?
I feel affirmed in my role as a functional medicine provider when patients have a new outlook and perspective regarding their health potential. Also, I feel honored when people refer their friends or family members for care based on their positive experience receiving care.
What’s your biggest accomplishment?
Convincing my wife, Dr. Anna Butler, to do life with me.
What’s the weirdest job you’ve ever had?
I lead undergraduate and high school students through our anatomy lab as a “Tour of The Body” guide for 2.5 years during graduate school.
What problems do you consistently solve for your clients?
Dietary and lifestyle intervention can be very confusing in our digital age. People are bombarded with information and it can be difficult for them to know what approach to take. I use comprehensive labs to establish sustainable lifestyle habits and I consistently see improvement in blood sugar regulation, thyroid function, and a reduction in the stress associated with making a lifestyle change.
What are you complimented on most in your work?
My ability to educate people on complex processes using simple terms.
What do you do for fun in your spare time? What are your hobbies?
I enjoy running, listening to podcasts, rock climbing, attempting to cook, and pretending to be a movie critic.
Do you have any other passions of personal goals that you would like to share?
My older brother, Nicholas, has Down syndrome. He inspires me every day. I would love to play a role in improving the health and wellbeing of the Down syndrome community in Chicago. On a side note, my brother refers to Down syndrome as “Up syndrome” and I believe that he is on to something!
