Types of Chiropractic Adjustments We Use
There are several different techniques used to perform chiropractic adjustments. Your chiropractor will select the one that best matches your needs:
1. Diversified Technique
The most commonly used manual adjustment, involving a high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust. It often results in the classic “pop” or “crack” sound and is used to increase range of motion.
2. Activator Technique
Uses a handheld spring-loaded device to deliver a low-force impulse to specific points on the spine or joints. Ideal for patients who prefer a gentler approach.
3. Thompson Drop Technique
Involves a special table with drop sections that assist in the adjustment, allowing for a lighter manual thrust.
4. Gonstead Technique
Focuses on adjusting the pelvis and lower spine through precise assessments and targeted realignment.
5. Flexion-Distraction
A gentle, non-thrusting technique used to treat disc issues and spinal stenosis. It involves slow, rhythmic movements on a specialized table.
6. Extremity Adjustments
Adjustments applied to joints outside the spine—such as shoulders, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles—to restore full-body function.
7. Webster Technique
A gentle chiropractic method that focuses on balancing the pelvis and reducing tension in surrounding muscles and ligaments—often used during pregnancy to support optimal fetal positioning and improve comfort.
