The NADA Protocol: Auricular Acupuncture for Stress, Recovery, and Nervous System Support

The NADA protocol is a standardized ear acupuncture approach designed to support nervous system regulation and emotional balance. Used worldwide in clinical and community settings, it helps manage stress while supporting recovery, sleep, pain, and overall resilience.

Origins of the NADA Protocol

The roots of the NADA protocol trace back to 1973, when Hong Kong neurologist Dr. H.L. Wen observed that stimulation of a specific point in the ear—associated with the lung and vagus nerve—reduced withdrawal symptoms in individuals dependent on opiates.

During the opioid crisis of the 1970s in New York City, Dr. Michael Smith expanded on Dr. Wen’s findings. He developed a five-point ear acupuncture protocol that could be delivered safely and efficiently in community-based settings. This approach became known as “acupuncture detoxification,” or “acu-detox,” due to its calming and stabilizing effects during withdrawal.

In 1985, Dr. Smith and colleagues formally established the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) to promote training, standardization, and ethical use of this protocol among healthcare and behavioral health professionals. Since then, the NADA protocol has been adopted worldwide in hospitals, recovery centers, disaster response settings, and community clinics.

How the NADA Protocol Is Used Today

The NADA protocol involves stimulating five specific points on each ear. These points are associated with the nervous system, stress regulation, and overall physiological balance. Sessions are typically quiet and nonverbal, allowing the body to settle without cognitive effort.

Today, the protocol is used globally to support:

  • Addiction recovery and substance use treatment

  • Smoking cessation

  • Insomnia and sleep disruption

  • Chronic pain conditions

  • Post-traumatic stress

  • Everyday stress and emotional overload

It is considered a supportive therapy rather than a standalone treatment and is often integrated into broader care plans.

Using the NADA Protocol at Home

In some cases, elements of the NADA protocol can be supported at home using non-invasive tools such as ear seeds. These provide gentle stimulation to specific ear points between professional sessions.

Follow the visual guide below to understand basic ear point placement when using ear seeds at home.

What Are Ear Seeds?

Ear seeds are small seeds or beads placed on specific points of the ear to apply continuous, gentle pressure. They are a form of auriculotherapy, which focuses on stimulating reflex points on the ear that correspond to different systems of the body.

Unlike acupuncture needles, ear seeds do not puncture the skin. They are typically held in place with adhesive tape and can be worn for several days, allowing for ongoing stimulation. Ear seeds are based on the same foundational principles as acupuncture and acupressure and are commonly used to support stress regulation, focus, and overall balance.
