About Dr. Mullen
Having pivoted from working in art history, I decided to become a physician after experiencing a lifelong chronic medical condition. I became fascinated with integrative and functional medicine early in my career, and have always enjoyed offering my patients a full repertoire of choices in their health care. I’m board certified in Family Medicine and Integrative Medicine and have been practicing for more than 25 years. I’m a proud mother of three kids. I live in Milwaukee, WI.
Q&A with Dr. Mullen
What are you most passionate about professionally? Personally?
I’m passionate about the sacred relationship between doctor and patient. In my opinion, that relationship IS medicine. Personally, I love animals, art, music, and performances of all kinds. I’m an avid traveler.
What three traits define you?
Resilience
Curiosity
Humor
What would you do even if you didn’t get paid to do it?
I would take care of injured animals (particularly sea creatures).
What are you surprisingly good at?
I’ve been playing the piano since I was four years old.
What’s one thing you couldn’t live without?
My children, my baby grand piano, and my book collection. I know, that’s three.
How long have you been working in your field?
More than 25 years.
What’s the biggest proof that you’re good at what you do?
I have patients who have stayed with me for my entire career.
What’s your biggest accomplishment?
Raising three children.
What’s the weirdest job you’ve ever had?
I don’t think any of my jobs have been weird, per se. I started off my work life employed by my dad’s restaurant, which was previously my grandfather’s business. It has been around for 92 years!
What problems do you consistently solve for your clients?
I’m very good at hormone-related problems (menopause, peri-menopause, hormone imbalances of all kids), adrenal fatigue, thyroid issues, gut health, and autoimmunity.
Who is your ideal client and why should they connect with you?
My ideal client is one who likes to collaborate and work closely together. They should connect with me if they want to feel heard and supported, and if they value a long-standing, trusting, ongoing relationship.
In your work or creative process, what concepts are sacred? Which rules have you made/followed?
To me, the relationship between the patient and the physician is sacred. Without that human connection, healing cannot occur fully. A rule that is important to me: it’s not enough to just “do no harm” in patient care (part of the Hippocratic Oath); rather, showing up with deep concern for another human being is tantamount to getting the patient well.
Do you have any other passions of personal goals that you would like to share?
One of my most important personal goals is to be completely bilingual in English and Italian. I fell in love with Italy when I lived there as a college student. I hope to spend time there regularly and be able to communicate with the people there effortlessly.
What do you do for fun in your spare time? What are your hobbies?
I’m an avid exerciser. I love to work out in the gym and swim laps. I volunteer with horses. I enjoy scuba diving, playing the piano, attending concerts, and reading. I spend time most every day learning Italian.
Share something unique that most people don’t know about you.
In my mind, I am an excellent dancer. In real life, not so much.
