Functional Medicine and Clinical Nutrition

Applying a Functional Medicine lens in prenatal care can support optimal health, naturally, for both mother and child during important milestones of pregnancy.

Dietary and Nutritional Impact

To ensure you are providing the best nutritional environment for your baby’s development, working with a Functional Medicine provider will help you navigate critical dietary choices during pregnancy.

Functional Medicine seeks to prevent illness by looking towards the root cause of disease. In pregnancy, this means that we look closely at the origins of health and disease as it applies to the impact of nutritional status on your growing child’s health.

Our Functional Medicine specialists and registered dietitian nutritionists take a comprehensive look at what your body needs to thrive during pregnancy. Utilizing a complete health history workup, we identify the interactions between lifestyle, diet and environment that influence your pregnancy. With advanced diagnostic testing, we often monitor key nutrient levels, the health of the maternal microbiome, essential vs. toxic elements, and hormone levels. Through our patient-provider partnership, we offer individualized coaching on recommended lifestyle practices and a whole foods, nutrient-dense diet that is tailored for you and your baby’s needs.

Maintaining Fundamental Health During Pregnancy

During your pregnancy you may encounter various health challenges that require attention.

We provide natural support and treatment for common pregnancy symptoms like nausea, vomiting, heartburn, indigestion, fatigue, constipation, edema, insomnia, and headaches.

Throughout your pregnancy, we will continue to fine-tune your diet to prevent conditions such as hypertension, preeclampsia, hormonal imbalances, gestational diabetes, and anemia. If you do encounter such complications, we offer natural, non-invasive treatments that can complement your prenatal care.

If you are entering motherhood with a pre-existing condition such as autoimmune disease, diabetes, or hypertension, our providers can help you avoid further complications or the severity of a postpartum flare up.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture can be used in a variety of ways to promote and sustain a healthy pregnancy. Our expertise at Aligned Modern Health is preventative care to strengthen the mother and baby, enhance the mother’s wellbeing, and address any concerns that occur during pregnancy.

Managing Pregnancy Pain

Acupuncture is very effective in reducing both the severity and incidence of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Common musculoskeletal complaints during pregnancy are: back pain, rib pain, sciatica, and pubic bone pain. When used regularly, acupuncture can be an effective treatment in reducing and eliminating musculoskeletal pain during pregnancy.

Breech or posterior babies

Moxibustion, or “moxa” is the burning of mugwort over the surface of the skin with an insulting medium.  Moxa can help turn or move breech and/or posterior babies by utilizing its heating or cooling properties.  Ideally, treatment is at 34 –35 weeks, but can still be useful when used later in the pregnancy.

Healthy delivery

Specialized acupuncture treatments can help prepare a woman’s body for childbirth 3-4 weeks prior to the due date.  Acupuncture treatment at this time would target preparing the pelvis and cervix for delivery, treatment is typically scheduled once per week until labor begins.

Inducing labor

If your healthcare provider recommends inducing labor, Acupuncture can provide a safe and gentle induction to labor if the baby is overdue.  Using acupuncture for induction can be an effective alternative to a medical induction.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic Physical Medicine can help improve overall health and wellness during your pregnancy. Pregnancy specific chiropractic care combined with our physical strengthening and stabilizing exercises can provide an optimal foundation for your baby to grow and prepare your body for delivery.

Webster Technique

Our chiropractic physicians are passionate about women’s health and train in the Webster Technique, a specialized assessment and treatment technique that facilitates pelvic stability, alignment, and proper function throughout pregnancy.

A Chiropractic Physical Medicine program can aid in improving physical strength during pregnancy and prepare your body for a successful vaginal birth. By exercising, improving strength, flexibility and pelvic stability, you are training your muscles to carry your baby with more ease and preparing your muscles for labor and delivery.

Chiropractic care promotes health through a thorough examination of the body and physical, hands-on treatments. We use therapies that include muscle and joint mobilizations (also referred to as chiropractic adjustments) as well as rehabilitative exercises to restore proper function to the musculoskeletal system, and in the case of pregnancy, the focus is on the lower back, pelvis, core musculature, and pelvic floor.

Prenatal Massage

Prenatal massage can help you manage the changes your body experiences throughout pregnancy.

Prenatal massage addresses the general taxing of the body that comes with internal hormonal changes, as well as the aches and pains that result from physical changes to the bony and muscular structure.

Relaxin, an important hormone during pregnancy, allows for ligaments to become more elastic so that the pelvis can open up for child birth. As a result, the pelvis becomes less stable during pregnancy and the surrounding muscles may grow stiff to provide more stability.

This is one of the many changes our massage therapists are prepared to help you address.  Our massage therapists have all received advanced training and certification in prenatal techniques.

This training prepares the therapist with knowledge of what the body goes through during each trimester so they can better achieve your treatment goals.
